Renewables help US power system survive summer stress test
ICLN•Record renewable generation supplied much of the extra electricity as US power demand rose during the summer of 2026, limiting growth in fossil-fuel output. In Texas, clean-power generation rose more than 11% in the first nine months, while fossil-fuel generation increased by less than 1%.
1. Renewables meet rising demand
Surging electricity demand from data centers and air conditioning tested the US power system during the summer of 2026. Record renewable generation carried much of the additional load, while fossil-fuel generation growth remained limited.
2. Texas and PJM figures
In Texas, electricity load grew roughly 4% in the first nine months of 2026 from a year earlier, while clean-power generation rose more than 11%. Solar generation expanded roughly 26%, wind output climbed more than 8%, and fossil-fuel generation increased less than 1%. In PJM, clean-power generation rose around 2.5% from January through September, compared with around 1.2% growth in demand; solar output expanded more than 20%, while fossil-fuel generation rose 0.4%.
3. Solar and storage contribute
Solar generation set records in Texas and California during the summer, and solar’s share of PJM generation during May through August was 4.4%, up from 2.9% for all of 2025. Battery storage is extending daytime solar output into evening hours, while gas-fired generation remains an important source of flexibility. The article says more generation, transmission and storage capacity will be needed as demand continues to climb.
