Russian attack on Ukrainian city kills 17 a day after Trump lifts diesel sanctions on Moscow
USO•A Russian attack killed 17 people, including three children, in Zaporizhzhia and wounded 18 others. The strike came a day after Donald Trump announced a deal to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports.
1. Deadly strike in Zaporizhzhia
Seventeen people, including three children, were killed and 18 others wounded in a Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia on Saturday. One strike reduced part of an apartment block to rubble. A missile attack on a restaurant in Kyiv wounded seven people later that day.
2. Zelenskiy criticizes decision
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the lifting of sanctions on Russian diesel exports emboldened Moscow. He said Kyiv had been caught by surprise by Trump’s announcement, which came during talks between Ukrainian and European officials and US negotiators in Miami.
3. Sanctions and fuel prices
Trump’s decision came as his administration seeks to curb fuel prices, which have risen sharply during the US conflict with Iran. Kyiv had urged Washington to increase pressure on Moscow, while Trump has criticized Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, saying they drove up global prices.
