Safety group urges EU to reject Tesla FSD over speed offset
TSLA•The European Transport Safety Council urged EU member states to reject Tesla’s FSD system, saying its speed offset can raise the maximum speed up to 50% above detected limits. An EU-wide approval vote is now unlikely before December.
1. Speed offset concern
The European Transport Safety Council said Tesla’s driver-assistance system includes a speed offset function that can raise the maximum speed by as much as 50% above the limit detected by the vehicle. The group said Tesla has not sought an exemption from United Nations Economic Commission rules for exceeding posted limits through the function.
2. Approval timeline
Dutch regulator RDW approved the system in April, followed by Belgium and a handful of other countries. Sweden, France and the Czech Republic have raised concerns about its ability to exceed speed limits, and a vote on EU-wide approval, previously expected in October, is now unlikely before December.
3. Other requested rejection
ETSC said regulators should reject approval of the speed offset and a separate feature that matches driving speeds to surrounding traffic. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said delaying FSD approval “will cost lives.”
