Sectors brace for a pivot as US midterm elections loom
SPY•Investors are weighing how a shift in Congress could affect clean energy, housing, healthcare, AI, data centers, defense, financials and cryptocurrencies. Prediction markets put the chance of a Democratic sweep at 72%, while the chance of Republicans retaining both chambers stood at 6%.
1. Potential beneficiaries
Analysts said a strong Democratic showing could support clean-energy stocks by reinforcing expectations for federal backing, while Democrats could also pursue additional housing affordability measures. UBS said bipartisan support could advance energy and infrastructure approvals, including nuclear power.
2. Sectors facing scrutiny
A Democratic majority could bring greater scrutiny of AI and data-center development, while healthcare faces mixed prospects from potential attention to costs, insurance plans and taxes. Defense spending could return to congressional scrutiny, though companies including RTX and Northrop Grumman continue to see robust arms demand and record backlogs.
3. Other policy effects
Analysts said additional oversight could slow, but was unlikely to derail, financial regulatory easing. The election is not expected to significantly affect cryptocurrency prices, but a Democratic-controlled Senate could make it harder to revive the Clarity Act.
