Senegal parliamentary committee to review revised budget key for new IMF deal
SPY•Senegal's finance committee will review a revised budget that is crucial to securing a new IMF programme. The 2026 budget cuts projected real GDP growth to 2.7% from roughly 5% and widens the deficit to 7.6% of GDP from 5.4%.
1. Budget returns to committee
National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko said the finance committee would review the revised budget after Finance Minister Cheikh Diba requested another look during a parliamentary debate on Tuesday. Sonko said he would work to set dates for committee proceedings and the next plenary session; the committee rejected the bill last week.
2. Growth and deficit revisions
The amended 2026 budget lowers real GDP growth to 2.7% from roughly 5% and widens the deficit to 7.6% of GDP from 5.4%. Senegal's debt had reached 132% of GDP by the end of 2024, IMF figures show, after the government discovered billions of dollars in misreported borrowing by the previous administration. Sonko said earlier this month that lawmakers from his Pastef party would not vote for the bill as it stood.
