Senseonics starts first human study of Freedom glucose monitor with no on-body component
SENS•Senseonics began its first-in-human feasibility study of its investigational Freedom continuous glucose monitor, designed for one-year monitoring without an external on-body transmitter. The study follows preclinical testing with more than 18,500 communication data points and will inform a pivotal trial expected to begin in 2027; a commercial launch is targeted for 2028.
1. Study begins
Senseonics initiated its first-in-human feasibility study of Freedom, an investigational continuous glucose monitoring system designed to communicate directly with mobile devices via Bluetooth and eliminate an external on-body transmitter. The system is designed to provide one-year monitoring.
2. Preclinical testing
Preclinical testing completed in the second quarter of 2026 covered approximately seven weeks and more than 18,500 communication data points. The preferred antenna design achieved 100% communication success within the target distance, supporting selection of a configuration for human evaluation.
3. Next milestones
The feasibility study will inform a pivotal trial expected to begin in 2027. Senseonics is targeting a potential commercial launch in 2028.
