SK Telecom Plans 15GW AI Data Center Buildout, Activates 5GW from 2029
SKM•SK Telecom will build a 15GW AI data center network in Korea, activating 5GW in Ulsan and Jeolla regions from 2029 and scaling to 15GW total. The KRW70 trillion project will leverage SK Group affiliates, strategic partner investments, long-term customer contracts and project financing.
1. AI Data Center Buildout Plan
SK Telecom has announced an AI data center buildout targeting 15GW of capacity across Korea, beginning with a combined 2GW cluster in Ulsan and an additional 1GW in Jeolla. The initial 5GW will come online in stages starting in 2029 before expanding to full 15GW capacity.
2. Financing and Timeline
The estimated project cost is approximately KRW70 trillion, to be funded through a mix of SK Telecom’s own investment, strategic partner equity, long-term customer contracts and project financing. Activation of the first 5GW is scheduled from 2029, with subsequent phases to reach 15GW in the early 2030s.
3. Strategic Context and National Goals
This initiative supports Korea’s AI G3 strategy to become a top-three global AI power and addresses balanced regional development priorities. By building GW-scale AI computing infrastructure, SK Telecom aims to reduce global supply shortages and position Korea as an AI hub.
4. SK Group Collaboration and Capabilities
SK Group affiliates contribute core capabilities in semiconductors, energy solutions and data center operations, with SK Telecom leading design, construction and management. The company will integrate full-stack AI infrastructure strengths to attract global AI operators and anchor tenants.
