SpaceX Leases Memphis Data Center to Anthropic, Secures Google AI Contracts
GOOG•SpaceX rented out its Memphis Colossus 1 data center capacity to Anthropic PBC after encountering latency and hardware challenges connecting it to Colossus 2 and 3. Alphabet’s Google and Anthropic have struck potential multi-billion dollar computing deals with SpaceX, positioning the rocket maker as an AI infrastructure provider.
1. Technical Hurdles at Colossus 1
SpaceX built its Colossus 1 facility in Memphis in just 122 days but faced latency issues when linking it to Colossus 2 and 3 campuses over distances exceeding 10 miles. Aging network infrastructure and mixed Nvidia chip generations, including Hopper, Blackwell and older accelerators, further complicated synchronization across the cluster.
2. Lease to Anthropic PBC
Rather than continue integration, SpaceX opted to rent the full capacity of Colossus 1 to AI developer Anthropic PBC. The move creates a new revenue stream as SpaceX transitions part of its data center build-out into external service offerings.
3. Strategic Contracts with Google
Alphabet’s Google has negotiated computing agreements alongside Anthropic that could be worth tens of billions over several years. These deals bolster both companies’ AI model training initiatives by securing additional high-performance compute capacity.
4. Pivot to AI Infrastructure Provider
The shift underscores SpaceX’s broader strategy to market itself not only as a launch services leader but also as a ground-based AI infrastructure provider. Success with initial leases may accelerate plans for further data center campuses tied to its upcoming IPO roadshow.
