Spanish government to press on with tighter data centre rules before election
XLK•Spain’s government plans tighter oversight of future data centres before a November 29 election, with a decree covering water and electricity rules that would not require parliamentary approval.
1. Decree plans move forward
Digital Transformation Minister Oscar Lopez said the government intends to advance a decree regulating the fast-growing data centre sector. Ministries are reviewing public consultation submissions and working on a common position.
2. Investment and resource concerns
Spain is balancing investment by Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, mainly focused in Aragon, against concerns about data centres’ energy and water use. Both companies said their plans in the region remain unaltered and urged Spain to promote legal certainty and predictability for long-term investment.
