Stellantis Extends Fiat 500 Plant Halt, Plans China-Built Jeep SUV for Europe by 2030
STLA•Stellantis extended its Mirafiori plant shutdown through July 31 due to engine, bumper and sensor shortages, cutting hybrid Fiat 500 assembly to 400 units daily and stoking demand concerns. The automaker also plans a China-built Jeep SUV for Europe by 2030 via a Dongfeng joint venture, expanding its lineup to six models including the electric Recon.
1. Mirafiori Plant Extended Shutdown
Stellantis notified unions that its Mirafiori plant in Turin will halt operations from July 27 to July 31, ahead of a planned three-week shutdown in August. The extension follows a separate week-long closure for a local public holiday and aims to address supply disruptions in key components.
2. Hybrid Fiat 500 Production Challenges
Parts shortages—spanning engines, bumpers and sensors—have forced daily assembly down to 400 hybrid Fiat 500 units from 430 earlier this year, raising concerns about market demand. Stellantis had targeted production of 100,000 hybrid and electric Fiat 500 models in 2026, though that goal was not reaffirmed during recent talks.
3. China-Built Jeep SUV Strategy
Stellantis will introduce a China-manufactured Jeep SUV in Europe by 2030 through a joint venture with Dongfeng in Wuhan, boosting its European Jeep lineup from two to six models, including the all-electric Recon next year. The partnership also includes plans for Dongfeng to build vehicles at a Stellantis plant in France, reinforcing the group’s renewed China strategy.
