Supermicro $2.5 Billion Smuggling Probe Threatens 71% Nvidia GPU Revenue

Liaw’s arrest on charges of smuggling $2.5 billion in Nvidia-powered servers to China raises risk of severed GPU supply for Supermicro. The company derives about 71% of its revenue from Nvidia GPUs, exposing it to potentially devastating business loss if the partnership dissolves.

1. Liaw Arrest and Smuggling Allegations

In March, co-founder Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw was arrested on charges of smuggling $2.5 billion worth of Nvidia-powered servers to China during 2024 and 2025. Liaw pleaded not guilty and was released on a $5 million bond, while Supermicro itself and its other executives are not named as defendants.

2. Nvidia Supply Dependence

Supermicro generates about 71% of its revenue from products built around Nvidia GPUs and has no long-term supply contract with Nvidia. A decision by Nvidia to distance itself could disrupt product availability, halt server shipments and inflict severe revenue declines.

3. Analyst Calls for Leadership Change

Analysts warn Liaw’s indictment damages Supermicro’s credibility and urge installation of independent directors to reassure partners. Susquehanna analysts have called for replacing CEO Charles Liang and refreshing the board to restore trust and safeguard the Nvidia relationship.
