Sweden Demands Tesla Remove Speed-Offset for EU FSD Approval
TSLA•On April 30, Sweden’s transport authority urged the EU’s motor vehicles committee to reject Tesla’s Full Self-Driving rollout unless its speed-offset feature is removed. The committee meets June 30 to vote on EU-wide approval, a pivotal step for Tesla’s European sales growth.
1. Sweden Recommends Blocking FSD Rollout
A letter dated April 30 from the Swedish Transport Administration urged the EU’s Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles to vote against granting bloc-wide approval to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software unless its speed-offset capability is disabled.
2. FSD Speed-Offset Feature Under Scrutiny
The speed-offset feature allows drivers to set a margin above posted speed limits, enabling vehicles to exceed legal limits under supervision. Swedish regulators argue this undermines road safety and could violate the EU’s automated vehicle regulations.
3. EU Approval Process and Timeline
The TCMV will convene on June 30 to review the proposal, following approval in countries like the Netherlands by the RDW in April. A negative vote would stall Tesla’s plan for a unified European rollout of its supervised self-driving system.
4. Implications for Tesla’s European Operations
EU-wide approval is crucial for scaling Tesla’s vehicle deliveries across Europe amid rising competition from Chinese EV makers. Delays or restrictions could slow the company’s market expansion and affect regional sales targets.
