Synchrony Funds $24K Annual Tuition for Skilled-Trades Degrees
SYF•Synchrony introduces a tuition program funding up to $24,000 annually for U.S. employees after three months of service to earn debt-free associate degrees in HVAC, electrical, plumbing and welding through 20+ partner colleges. The initiative targets a U.S. skilled-trades shortfall of nearly 500,000 unfilled roles today.
1. Program Details
Synchrony employees become eligible after three months of service to pursue debt-free associate degrees in high-demand fields such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing and welding. The company will cover up to $24,000 per employee per year through a network of more than 20 community and technical colleges, offering hybrid classes, apprenticeships and hands-on lab training.
2. Strategic Rationale
The initiative responds to a current U.S. shortfall of nearly 500,000 skilled-trade roles, with projections of an additional 2.1 million vacancies by 2030. By building internal talent in modern trades requiring both hands-on expertise and digital fluency, Synchrony aims to enhance service capacity for home-ecosystem partners and bolster skilled support for data center operations.
3. Financial and Community Impact
This program expands Synchrony’s Education as an Equalizer framework, which already provides up to $9,000 annually for tech certifications and 12-month tech apprenticeships. The Synchrony Foundation has donated $150,000 to women’s trade scholarships and nearly $1 million to skilled-trade programs since 2021, reinforcing community pipelines and supporting small and midsize business partners.
