Syntholene Energy Adds Ex-Suncor, Shell Executive to Guide 2026 Iceland Demonstration Facility
SHEL•Marc Mageau, who held senior leadership roles at Suncor and Shell managing large-scale oil sands, refining operations and supply chains, has joined Syntholene Energy’s advisory board. The company is constructing its geothermal-integrated high-temperature electrolysis demonstration facility in Iceland, due for completion in June 2026.
1. Appointment of Industry Veteran Marc Mageau
Syntholene Energy has appointed Marc Mageau to its advisory board. Mageau brings over 30 years of experience from senior roles at Suncor, including Senior Vice President of Oil Sands Operations and Supply Chain, and two decades at Shell in technical, commercial and leadership positions.
2. Geothermal-Integrated Demonstration Facility Construction
The company is building the world’s first geothermally-integrated high-temperature electrolysis demonstration facility in Husavik, Iceland. Construction is on track for completion in June 2026, positioning Syntholene to validate its Thermal Hybrid Production System at demonstration scale.
3. Commercialization and Cost Targets
Syntholene aims to produce ultrapure synthetic jet fuel at 70% lower cost than competing technologies by leveraging Mageau’s operational expertise. The advisory addition supports efforts to scale the platform from demonstration to commercial production while optimizing refining operations and supply chain logistics.
