Taiwan president calls for Micron, workers to negotiate sincerely ahead of possible strike
MU•Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te urged Micron and its workers to negotiate in good faith ahead of possible strike action over bonuses. Micron says the new Taichung facility’s capacity for 2027 is already sold out and expects high-bandwidth memory to grow faster than the rest of the DRAM industry through 2028.
1. Possible strike in Taiwan
Lai called on Micron and its workers to negotiate sincerely as a union’s members have authorized a strike over a dispute concerning the company’s bonus scheme. Micron employs about 15,000 people in Taiwan and said it has invested more than T$1.6 trillion ($49.4 billion) on the island.
2. Demand and union talks
Speaking at the opening of Micron’s new advanced assembly and testing facility in Taichung, Micron President and Chief Operating Officer Manish Bhatia said all capacity the factory will build in 2027 has been sold, and the company expects high-bandwidth memory to grow faster than the rest of the DRAM industry through 2028. The Taichung union said it wants more substantive dialogue; mediation with the Taoyuan union ended without agreement in September, while Taichung negotiations continue.
