Taiwan says it is in continuous talks with US about arms sales
LMT•Taiwan’s defence minister said it remains in continuous talks with the United States about arms sales and has received reassurances that US policy toward Taiwan has not changed. A 2019 order for 66 Lockheed Martin F-16V fighters is delayed, with the first two reportedly awaiting delivery in Hawaii.
1. Talks continue on arms sales
Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo said the government has repeatedly received explanations from the United States that its policy toward Taiwan has not changed since the Washington summit between US and Chinese leaders. He said Taiwan remains in continuous discussions with the US on ongoing military sales and has received no notification of changes.
2. F-16 delivery delays
Taiwan has a backlog of previously ordered weapons, including 66 Lockheed Martin F-16V fighters ordered in 2019. Koo said production progress has reached a stage where delivery is possible, but declined to comment on the schedule and said compensation measures were involved because of the delay. Taiwan media have reported that the first two aircraft are awaiting their delivery flight in Hawaii.
