Tencent WeChat Pay Adds PayPal QR Payments, Pressuring Alibaba’s Alipay
BABA•Tencent will enable U.S.-based PayPal users to make QR code payments through WeChat Pay’s merchant network in China, with transactions by foreign travelers up nearly 80% year-on-year in January–April. This intensifies competition for Alibaba’s Alipay, which currently dominates cashless payments in taxis, restaurants and retail outlets.
1. PayPal Integration in WeChat Pay
Tencent has enabled U.S.-based PayPal accounts to link with WeChat Pay, allowing users to scan QR codes at merchants across China. The feature launches first for U.S. travelers, with plans to extend to additional markets, enhancing cross-border payment convenience.
2. Surge in Foreign Transactions
Transactions by foreign visitors in China through WeChat Pay rose almost 80% year-on-year in January–April, as tourist arrivals climbed past 35 million in 2025. Tourism accounted for over 4% of China’s GDP in 2024, underpinning strong demand for cashless options.
3. Competitive Implications for Alipay
Alibaba’s Alipay currently holds widespread acceptance in taxis, restaurants and retail outlets nationwide. The PayPal integration could erode Alipay’s share among international visitors, potentially prompting Alibaba to pursue similar partnerships or promotional fee waivers.
