Tesla owners in Slovakia welcome assisted-drive tech as EU weighs rollout across bloc
TSLA•Latvia and Slovakia approved Tesla's assisted-driving software, bringing the number of European countries approving it to 10. A test drive in Slovakia exposed safety concerns, while the EU weighs a broader rollout.
1. Approvals and rollout
Latvia became the 10th European country to approve Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD), following Slovakia's approval earlier this month. Tesla is seeking support ahead of a vote that could pave the way for a broader rollout across the EU.
2. Safety under scrutiny
During a test drive, the software handled congested highway driving and merges but failed to slow for a closed barrier and did not steer into an open charging bay, requiring the driver to take over. TAD costs €99 per month. Tesla says the technology can prevent collisions by more than four times and save lives, figures safety researchers contest. In Slovakia, Tesla owners organized a vehicle light show outside the transport ministry to lobby for the technology.
