Tesla’s supervised Full Self-Driving system has now accumulated more than 8.2 billion miles on public roads, representing all miles driven with a human overseeing the software’s operation. This figure underscores the scale of Tesla’s data collection efforts crucial for training and refining its autonomous algorithms.

The company reports that vehicles operating under supervised FSD experience one major collision for every X miles, a rate seven times lower than non-FSD vehicles. This metric is based on internal comparisons of crash data per mile driven and aims to demonstrate FSD’s safety advantages when under human supervision.

By showcasing demonstrable safety improvements, Tesla aims to bolster consumer confidence and justify its FSD subscription pricing, currently running at $199 per month or a one-time fee of $12,000. Continued progress in reducing accidents could strengthen regulatory approval prospects and enhance the autonomous driving segment’s contribution to Tesla’s long-term revenue growth.
