Tesla's supervised self-driving system often misreads speed limits, Belgian safety group finds
TSLA•Belgian safety group Johanna.be said tests of Tesla’s FSD system over three days and about 400 km found it often exceeded speed limits, averaging 44 km/h on tested 30 km/h roads around Brussels. The group urged Belgian and Dutch regulators to reassess approvals.
1. Tests find speed errors
Johanna.be said its July tests found Tesla’s FSD system often exceeded speed limits in 20 km/h and 30 km/h zones and incorrectly displayed higher limits. On most tested 30 km/h road segments around Brussels, the vehicle averaged 44 km/h; the group said the screen often showed a 50 km/h limit despite recognizing 30 km/h signs.
2. Regulators consider report
The group also said the system attempted to overtake cyclists on streets where overtaking is prohibited. It sent its report to the Flemish transportation ministry and Dutch regulator RDW, asking them to reassess approvals. RDW said it received the report and would consider it in its monitoring and surveillance processes.
3. Drivers remain responsible
Tesla’s FSD driver-assistance feature requires drivers to pay strict attention. The Flemish ministry said drivers remain fully responsible and must be ready to intervene if the system makes an error or fails to apply a traffic rule. Johanna.be also noted that the system often yielded proactively to pedestrians and cyclists.
