Tonix’s TONMYA Launch Follows Study Showing $29,896 Inpatient Costs for Fibromyalgia Patients
TNXP•Tonix launched TONMYA® in November 2025 as the first new U.S. fibromyalgia drug in over 15 years. A retrospective claims analysis of 261,776 patients (Apr 2023–Mar 2024) found 93.2% had at least one comorbidity and insured patients incurred annual costs of $29,896 inpatient, $9,453 pharmacy and $6,196 outpatient.
1. Study Design and Patient Profile
The retrospective analysis used Symphony Health closed claims data from April 2021 to April 2024, focusing on 261,776 U.S. adults diagnosed with fibromyalgia during Year 3 (April 2023–March 2024). The median patient age was 53, with 92.1% female representation; racial breakdown was 49.6% White non-Hispanic, 22.4% Hispanic, 19.6% Other and 8.3% Black.
2. Comorbidity and Treatment Patterns
Findings showed 93.2% of patients had at least one fibromyalgia-related comorbidity, most commonly anxiety/depression (63.9%), back pain (56.5%), hypertension (51.4%) and joint pain (48.4%). Medication classes used included antidepressants (48.2%), NSAIDs (43.4%), anticonvulsants (41.6%), muscle relaxants (40.7%) and opioids (39.4%), highlighting reliance on multimodal management.
3. Healthcare Resource Utilization and Costs
Among 92,157 insured patients, annual inpatient costs averaged $29,896 per patient, followed by pharmacy costs of $9,453 and outpatient costs of $6,196. These figures underscore substantial economic burden on commercial and public payers and signal significant market potential for more cost-effective therapies.
4. TONMYA Commercial Launch and Implications
TONMYA®, approved August 15, 2025, is a sublingual cyclobenzaprine formulation designed for nightly administration and long-term use. As the first fibromyalgia treatment approved in over 15 years, TONMYA’s entry addresses unmet medical need and positions Tonix to capitalize on a patient population facing high comorbidity burdens and extensive healthcare costs.
