Toyota Invests $6.2M for 1% in Tier IV, Eyes Level 4 e-Palette by FY2027
TM•Toyota Motor acquired a 1% stake in autonomous driving startup Tier IV valued at ¥1bn ($6.2m) alongside an MOU on technology collaboration. The partnership will integrate Tier IV’s open-source Autoware system into the e-Palette electric shuttle to achieve Level 4 autonomy by fiscal 2027.
1. Investment Details
Toyota Invention Partners acquired a 1% stake in Tier IV valued at ¥1bn ($6.2m). Tier IV’s investor base includes Sony Group, Sompo Holdings, KDDI, Suzuki Motor and Isuzu Motors.
2. Partnership Objectives
Under a memorandum of understanding, Toyota will integrate Tier IV’s open-source Autoware platform into the e-Palette electric shuttle to enable Level 4 autonomous operation by the end of fiscal 2027. The e-Palette, launched in 2025, is designed for driverless service under defined conditions.
3. Strategic Context
This alliance advances Toyota’s multi-pathway autonomy strategy by combining internal research with targeted partnerships. Alongside collaborations with Pony AI and a preliminary agreement with Waymo, Toyota aims to tailor autonomous solutions to each regional market.
