Toyota Joins Daimler-Volvo cellcentric JV to Develop Heavy-Duty Fuel Cells

TMTM

Toyota will join cellcentric alongside Daimler Truck and Volvo Group under a non-binding MOU to develop, produce and market fuel cell systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. The partners will co-manage core fuel cell manufacturing, system architecture and control elements and back early-stage hydrogen supply and infrastructure growth.

1. Partnership Structure and Objectives

Toyota, Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to add Toyota as an equal shareholder in cellcentric, the joint venture focused on fuel cell systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. As equal partners, all three companies will collaborate on the development, production and marketing of fuel cell systems.

2. Technology Development and Production

The companies will jointly manage the development and manufacturing of fuel cell cells—the core component of their systems—as well as system architecture and control elements. This collaboration leverages each partner’s expertise to create competitive products for heavy-duty and other demanding applications.

3. Hydrogen Infrastructure and Market Impact

The cellcentric JV will spearhead support for hydrogen supply and infrastructure by engaging with industry partners and associations across the hydrogen value chain. The expanded partnership is intended to accelerate decarbonization of commercial transport and position Toyota as a key player in the heavy-duty hydrogen ecosystem.
