Trump floats 'concept' of US-Canada deal that includes pipeline after conversation with Carney
SPY•Donald Trump said his administration has the “concept” of a trade deal with Canada that would include the Keystone XL pipeline. Mark Carney said the leaders had a good conversation and their teams would work in the coming weeks toward an outcome.
1. Trade deal concept
Trump said the proposed deal would be good for U.S. farmers and the country. Carney said their exchange built on constructive discussions about a mutually beneficial deal that would create jobs, improve affordability and respect Canada's languages, culture and sovereignty.
2. Pipeline and tariffs
Trump said Canada would build and pay for the Keystone XL pipeline, and that the United States would provide a route that was largely determined. The countries have imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on each other in recent months; Trump said last week a trade deal was coming soon, while Canada had previously reported limited progress in talks.
