Trump says he is highly unlikely to order Iran strikes if talks progress
USO•Donald Trump said he was highly unlikely to order fresh attacks on Iran if talks to end the conflict progress, while warning that the US has identified potential infrastructure targets if strikes resume. Both countries reported vessel incidents in or near the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping disruptions are restricting energy and other commodity exports.
1. Trump’s comments
Trump said fresh attacks on Iran were “highly unlikely” to be necessary if talks progress, depending on whether Iran signs a “very strong agreement.” He said the US had identified potential infrastructure targets, including 38 bridges that could be struck if attacks resume.
2. Vessel incidents reported
Iran said two oil tankers hit mines while attempting to pass through an “unauthorized route” in the Strait of Hormuz, and a third tanker caught fire after an explosion. The US said its air force disabled a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman as it tried to pass through a blockade; independent monitors reported an incident involving a bulk carrier and military forces nearby. The reported strikes could not be independently confirmed.
3. Conflict and negotiations
Iranian media suggested explosions in southern Iran were related to Iranian military activity, and officials had not confirmed missile strikes on Iranian territory. Qatar said the US and Iran were continuing to work toward an agreement. Iran has submitted a nuclear proposal through Qatar, with discussions dependent on Washington first meeting Tehran’s demands, a senior Iranian official said.
