Trump said the United States is leading China and other countries in AI and that he wants to maintain that position. He said he discussed AI with Xi during the Chinese president’s visit to the United States last week.
2. Executives to discuss oversight
Trump was scheduled to meet with technology executives at the White House to discuss AI. Attendees expected to include leaders from Anthropic, Meta, Google, Nvidia, Palantir and OpenAI, alongside administration officials and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Johnson said the gathering would focus on balancing innovation and oversight.
3. Public concern and stalled efforts
A September 17–20 poll found 73% of respondents worry AI companies have not done enough to prevent serious harm, while 55% said slowing AI development would be good. Senate efforts on AI regulation have stalled; Senator Ted Cruz said he hopes to move them forward after the November midterm elections.
