Trump unveils $200 billion South Korean investment in US; Seoul hedges on Alaska pipeline
UNG•Donald Trump announced plans for South Korea to invest up to $200 billion in US projects, including eight nuclear reactors and a Texas power project. Seoul said the proposed $54 billion Alaska LNG pipeline investment is not final and depends on commercial and legal conditions.
1. Investment package
Trump said South Korea would invest up to $200 billion in US projects under a strategic investment package. South Korea confirmed plans for $120 billion to build eight nuclear reactors and $22.3 billion for a Texas gas power project serving AI data centers.
2. Alaska project uncertain
South Korea said no decision had been made on whether to invest in the Alaska LNG project or how much to invest, and that commercial viability and legal procedures must be reviewed. The proposed $54 billion pipeline would carry gas from Alaska’s North Slope to a liquefaction facility on the southern coast.
3. Project requirements
The Alaska project is designed to transport about 3.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and produce up to 20 million metric tons of LNG annually. Developer Glenfarne said it has commitments for 13 million tons a year and needs another 3 million tons to support a final investment decision.
