Trump, Xi end summit with tea, tour of US archives and little sign of progress
SPY•Trump and Xi ended a three-day summit with few major breakthroughs on contentious issues. The US and China extended a trade truce by two months, and details of limited trade agreements are due Monday.
1. Limited trade progress
The summit featured ceremonial events but left major differences over trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and China’s ties to Iran unresolved. The two countries extended a trade truce due to expire November 10 by two months, allowing more time to work on a potentially larger deal. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said details of limited trade agreements would be released Monday.
2. More meetings planned
Trump said the talks would make US farmers happy but gave no details. He cited increased market access for US farmers and ranchers, while both leaders identified AI as an area for dialogue. Trump said he and Xi would meet twice more this year, in China in November and Miami in December.
3. Taiwan remains unresolved
Xi urged Trump to handle the Taiwan issue with prudence, while Trump had made no substantive public comment on Taiwan by Friday afternoon. The leaders also discussed Iran; US Ambassador to China David Perdue said Trump reiterated that direct or indirect support for Iran was unacceptable and received assurances from China.
