Uber and WeRide Expand Abu Dhabi Robotaxi Service to 70% of Downtown
Uber Technologies and WeRide Inc have begun commercial robotaxi operations in downtown Abu Dhabi, covering landmarks like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and hotels along the Corniche. The service now spans about 70% of the city center with a fourfold fleet increase since December 2024.
1. Downtown Robotaxi Service Launch
On February 12, Uber Technologies and WeRide Inc began commercial robotaxi operations in downtown Abu Dhabi, deploying the GXR model in areas including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and major hotels. Riders can book via UberX, Uber Comfort or a dedicated Autonomous option, with a safety specialist on board.
2. Coverage Expansion and Fleet Growth
The service now covers approximately 70% of Abu Dhabi’s core urban areas, and the robotaxi fleet has quadrupled since December 2024 under Tawasul Transport’s management. This phased rollout maintains on-board supervision as the partners move toward fully driverless rides.
3. Implications for Invesco NASDAQ Internet ETF
Uber and WeRide are notable holdings in the Invesco NASDAQ Internet ETF; successful regional deployments and fleet growth may bolster revenue projections and investor sentiment for the ETF’s exposure to autonomous mobility technology.
