Uber wins bid to throw out UK mass lawsuit by black cab drivers
UBER•A UK judge dismissed two linked lawsuits seeking around £340 million from Uber, ruling that the claimants missed the six-year filing limit. Uber faces a separate UK tax dispute of more than £1 billion next week.
1. Claims dismissed
The lawsuits, filed in 2024, alleged Uber gave Transport for London misleading and inaccurate information when it first received a private hire operator licence in 2012. Around 13,000 London black cab drivers sought nearly £200 million, while claims on behalf of two former private hire companies, Kabbie and Iride, sought around £140 million.
2. Limitation ruling
Judge Simon Birt said the claimants could have discovered the alleged deception before 2018 and dismissed the cases on limitation grounds without considering their merits. Uber said it was pleased the claims had been dismissed; a spokesperson for RGL Management said the cab drivers’ legal team was considering its options.
3. Separate tax dispute
Uber is due in court in London next week to fight the British tax authority in a separate dispute involving more than £1 billion.
