1. UBS Estimates Billions in Insured Losses from Recent Winter Storm
In a research note published January 28, UBS analysts forecast that insured losses from the late-January winter storm will total between $3 billion and $5 billion across the United States. The firm’s model allocates roughly 60% of the losses to residential property damage, 25% to automobile claims and 15% to business interruption and commercial property. UBS highlighted Texas, Missouri and Tennessee as the hardest-hit states, where subzero temperatures and heavy snowfall disrupted power grids and transportation networks. The analysts also noted that loss adjustment expenses could add another 10% to the overall insurance industry burden, placing upward pressure on combined ratios for U.S. property and casualty insurers in the first quarter of 2026.
