UK Plans Under-16 Ban on Instagram and Facebook with Curfews
META•UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government plans to ban under-16 users from Meta Platforms’ Instagram and Facebook, alongside TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube and X, while exempting messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal. Proposed measures include blocking livestreaming, stranger communication, overnight curfews, infinite-scroll limits and AI chatbot age restrictions.
1. UK Proposes Under-16 Social Media Ban
The UK government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer has introduced legislation to prohibit users under 16 from accessing major social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube and X. Messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal are excluded from the ban.
2. Targeted Platforms and Exemptions
Beyond access restrictions, the proposal would block features like livestreaming and communication with strangers for under-16 users. The measures also consider limits on infinite scrolling and impose an overnight curfew to reduce late-night online activity.
3. Restrictions and Enforcement Timeline
Officials are exploring tighter rules around AI-driven services, setting an 18+ minimum age for AI chatbot interactions and companion applications. The government aims to publish detailed enforcement guidelines in July, outlining penalties for non-compliance and technical requirements for age verification.
4. Potential Impact on Meta Engagement
Meta Platforms could face reduced engagement and ad revenue in the UK youth segment if the ban is approved. Broader compliance costs and platform adjustments may impact growth projections and operating expenses as the company updates its apps to adhere to new age restrictions.
