UK's Healey offers faster grid access for key data centres in AI push
XLK•Britain announced a fast-track plan offering strategically important data centres priority grid connections and planning support. The government estimates the country needs to triple its AI-capable data centre capacity by 2030.
1. Priority access for data centres
Finance minister John Healey announced a British Data Centre Covenant offering priority grid connections and, where necessary, permission for on-site power generation. In return, operators must invest in local communities, create jobs and protect water supplies. Healey said the aim was to keep sensitive military and public services data processed in Britain.
2. Power constraints and investment
Industry executives and developers have cited delays to electricity connections as a major obstacle to new data centre projects. Britain has more than 520 facilities, but the government says much of its infrastructure is not geared toward the power demands of advanced AI systems. The covenant builds on an AI growth zones programme that has generated £28.2 billion of investment, the government says.
