NSC•Union Pacific cited a nearly 7,000-page application supporting its proposed merger with Norfolk Southern, projecting $3.5 billion in annual shipper savings. The deal could shift 2.1 million truckloads to rail each year and create service across more than 88,000 county-to-county lanes.
1. Projected merger benefits
Union Pacific cited a nearly 7,000-page regulatory application in support of its proposed Norfolk Southern merger. The combination is projected to generate about $3.5 billion in annual shipper savings through lower-cost rail transportation and could shift about 2.1 million truckloads from highways to rail each year. It would create single-line service opportunities across more than 88,000 county-to-county lanes, eliminate more than 2,550 daily railcar and container handlings, and reduce rail movements by about 65,000 car-miles daily.
