United Airlines to Cut 100,000 Pounds of Food Waste with Economy Meal Preorders
United Airlines launched preordering for fresh United Economy meals on flights over 1,190 miles within North America and the Caribbean. The initiative is expected to reduce over 100,000 pounds of food waste annually, improve catering efficiency and boost onboard satisfaction.
1. United Launches Economy Meal Preorders to Drive Efficiency and Reduce Costs
United Airlines has expanded its onboard catering strategy by opening United Economy® meal preorders for all flights exceeding 1,190 miles across North America and the Caribbean, with fresh burgers, sandwiches and snack boxes available for selection via united.com or the mobile app up to five days before departure. Beginning March 1, the airline will transition to a fully preordered model for fresh entrees in Economy, while still offering grab-and-go snack boxes, packaged snacks and beverages onboard. By aligning food preparation with confirmed customer orders, United anticipates cutting more than 100,000 pounds of unused fresh food from landfills annually, enhancing its cost‐control measures and bolstering operating margins in the high-capacity winter quarter. The initiative builds on a 2021 rollout of preorder service in premium cabins, which lifted customer satisfaction scores for domestic premium passengers by nearly 40%, and underscores United’s strategy to leverage digital channels to improve load-factor efficiencies, reduce per-flight catering expenses and strengthen its competitive position in ancillary revenue generation.
