UPS Completes 2,000 Van AC Retrofits and Launches Cargo Cooling Pilot
UPS•UPS retrofitted 2,000 parcel vans with in-cab air conditioning for hot regions by June 1 and began piloting cooled-air ducting into rear cargo areas under its 2023 Teamsters contract. The pact mandates retrofits of 3,000 vehicles by June 1, 2027, 100 cargo-area AC upgrades and rapid arbitration for worker grievances.
1. Retrofit Completion and Cargo Cooling Pilot
UPS met its June 1 deadline to install in-cab air conditioning on 2,000 parcel delivery vans in the hottest regions and initiated a pilot program to pipe cooled air into rear cargo compartments. This addresses sweltering conditions behind the bulkhead door and responds directly to driver safety demands.
2. Contract Requirements and Future Rollout
Under the 2023 Teamsters national contract, UPS agreed in October to equip 5,000 hot-zone vehicles with AC systems, of which 2,000 are complete and 3,000 remain due by June 1, 2027. The deal also calls for upgrading 100 package cars with cargo-area ventilation for back-of-van cooling.
3. Arbitration Mechanism and Financial Implications
The contract’s first-ever standing arbitrator accelerates grievance resolutions, contributing to hundreds of millions of dollars in awards for workers. Teamsters officials warn UPS must adhere strictly to heat-protection terms, including installation of heat shields, under threat of financial penalties.
