GSAT•The FCC approved Amazon Leo’s $11.5 billion acquisition of Globalstar, clearing a deal that adds two dozen satellites and mobile-satellite spectrum to Amazon’s network. Amazon is targeting a commercial satellite service rollout by the end of 2026.
1. FCC approves acquisition
The Federal Communications Commission approved Amazon Leo’s $11.5 billion deal to acquire Globalstar. The agency said the assets will boost Amazon Leo’s entry into the direct-to-device market and allow it to offer fixed and mobile services.
2. Satellite network plans
Amazon Leo has launched nearly 400 satellites since April 2025 and aims to deploy thousands in low Earth orbit by 2029. The deal adds Globalstar’s two dozen satellites and mobile-satellite spectrum; Amazon has committed to investing more than $10 billion in Leo and is preparing to roll out commercial satellite services by the end of 2026.
3. Apple services continue
Globalstar currently powers satellite-based safety features such as Emergency SOS and Find My for Apple iPhone and Apple Watch users. Amazon said it has an agreement with Apple to continue providing those services, and the FCC said Amazon plans to acquire Apple’s stake in Globalstar.
