US says GM technology costs will drop by $20 billion through 2031 under new emissions rules

The US Transportation Department said GM’s technology costs will decline by $20.4 billion through 2031 under the finalized fuel economy rules. The 2024 rules had been estimated to cost GM $31.7 billion through 2031. The new rule is expected to take effect around early December.
2. Other automakers and penalties
The department estimated costs will decline by $6.6 billion for Stellantis, $5.8 billion for Ford, $4.5 billion for Toyota and $4.1 billion for Honda. GM said it supports the rule’s goals and its intention to better align fuel economy standards with market realities. Last year, Congress passed legislation ending penalties for failing to meet fuel economy requirements.
