Vianode seeks candidates for partnership or sale
GM•Vianode hired J.P. Morgan to find a partner for its next expansion phase and is open to a partnership or full takeover. Its Ontario plant, which needs additional funding, could supply synthetic graphite for about 2 million EVs annually, with production scheduled to start in 2029.
1. Seeking a partner
Vianode has hired J.P. Morgan to help find a partner to support its next expansion phase, CEO Burkhard Straube said. The Norwegian synthetic graphite producer is open to a partner providing capital, industrial expertise or a broader strategic relationship, and to outcomes ranging from a partnership to a full takeover.
2. Ontario expansion
Vianode is building a synthetic graphite plant in Ontario that could supply material for about 2 million electric vehicles annually, but needs additional funding to complete it. Production is scheduled to start in 2029, later than originally envisaged. The company hopes to have a partner in place by the end of this year.
3. Customers and capacity
General Motors signed a multibillion-dollar agreement in January 2025 for Vianode to supply synthetic graphite anode materials for EV batteries. Vianode has operated a plant in Norway since 2024, with capacity expected to reach 2,000 metric tons annually, enough for about 35,000 electric vehicles.
