Viasat, BMW Group showcased an in-vehicle satellite voice call integrated into a BMW iX3 infotainment system.

The showcase at 5G Automotive Association Meeting Week in Munich highlighted Non-Terrestrial Network connectivity beyond terrestrial cellular coverage.

The collaboration used Qualcomm Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF Gen 2, Cubic³ eSIM, Fraunhofer IIS voice codec, and NB-IoT over ViaSat’s L-band network.

The effort targets future safety-critical connectivity, including voice or messaging for emergency assistance in remote or underserved areas.
