Viasat Launches AI-Ready Tactical Mission Fabric for Edge-to-Cloud Military Networks
Viasat launched its Tactical Mission Fabric (TMF), a software-defined edge-to-cloud overlay delivering multi-path SATCOM, 5G, MANET and radio connectivity with AI-enabled, low-latency mesh networking for contested military environments. TMF will be demonstrated with AWS and Accelint at Modern Day Marine in Washington, D.C., April 28-30.
1. TMF Product Launch
Viasat launched its Tactical Mission Fabric (TMF), a comprehensive edge-to-cloud networking overlay designed to augment existing military tactical networks with resilient, multi-path connectivity. TMF integrates SATCOM, 5G, MANET and legacy radios into a software-defined mesh network, delivering low-latency AI-ready compute at the edge and automated failover under contested conditions.
2. Multi-Billion-Dollar Defense Network Market
TMF targets the rapidly growing multi-billion-dollar AI and analytics defense market driven by demand for real-time ISR, autonomous operations and distributed command and control. The solution offers an interoperable, network-as-a-service model that sidesteps costly hardware modernization and aligns with the U.S. Department of War’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy issued earlier this year.
3. Planned Demonstration at Modern Day Marine
Viasat will demonstrate TMF at the Modern Day Marine conference in Washington, D.C., April 28-30, collaborating with AWS and Accelint to simulate a contested network attack. The live demo will showcase automated mesh failover, AI-targeting session continuity and secure synchronization of tactical data with classified and impact-level 5 cloud environments.
4. Strategic Implications for Viasat
By overlaying a unified mission fabric, Viasat aims to strengthen its Defense and Advanced Technologies segment and accelerate contract awards. TMF’s open architecture and managed service approach may enhance margin visibility, expand recurring revenue streams and position Viasat competitively against SpaceX Starlink and traditional defense communications providers.
