Vineyard Wind Sues GE Vernova Over $4.5 Billion Turbine Contract

GEVGEV

Vineyard Wind has sued GE Vernova over its attempt to withdraw from a $4.5 billion contract to supply and maintain turbines for an 806 MW offshore wind farm. The dispute involves over $300 million in unpaid invoices and $545 million in defective-blade claims after a July 2024 collapse forced shutdowns.

1. Lawsuit Filed Over Contract Withdrawal

Vineyard Wind filed suit in Boston state court to bar GE Vernova from ending its turbine supply and maintenance agreements for the 806 MW, $4.5 billion offshore wind project off Martha’s Vineyard. The complaint seeks a preliminary injunction to keep GE Vernova bound to its contractual obligations.

2. Invoice Dispute and Defective Blade Claims

GE Vernova notified Vineyard Wind in February it would terminate the contract over more than $300 million in unpaid invoices. Vineyard Wind countered by withholding payments and asserting GE owes $545 million due to defective blades after a blade collapse in July 2024 triggered a government-mandated shutdown and replacements.

3. Operational and Financial Implications

GE Vernova’s proprietary technology underpins operations and maintenance, raising concerns that project functionality—and loan repayment—could be jeopardized if the dispute persists. A foreclosure risk looms should the wind farm cease operations, and a preliminary injunction hearing is set for 16 April.
