Viral Cranberry Sauce Boosts Good Foods’ Sales at Walmart and Target
Good Foods CEO Andrew Johnson grew the family canned-food venture into a national supplier for Walmart and Target after sourcing products from farmers and building in-store displays himself. This holiday season its cranberry sauce, carried by Target for two years, went viral on Facebook and Twitter, boosting repeat orders.
1. Family Business Origins
Andrew Johnson inherited a legacy of food distribution when his father launched his own business in the early 1990s after leaving Abbott Labs. Initially sourcing canned goods like Ensure and Pedialyte and later fresh and frozen produce, the company built relationships with farmers and retailers over decades.
2. From Trunk Deliveries to National Supply
In its early days, Johnson and his father physically delivered cans from their car trunks to retailer back doors and assembled in-store displays themselves. Today the business supplies major chains including Walmart and Target, having grown its logistics and production capacity significantly.
3. Cranberry Sauce Goes Viral
Two years ago Target invited Good Foods to develop a cranberry sauce line, and this holiday season that product went viral on Facebook and Twitter. The unexpected social media momentum, partly driven by competitor supply issues, led Target to place repeat orders for the 2026 holiday run.
