Vivani Medical and Novo Nordisk to Evaluate NPM-139 Semaglutide Implant for Weight Management
VANI•Vivani Medical signed a non-exclusive agreement with Novo Nordisk to evaluate its NanoPortal™-based semaglutide implant, NPM-139, for chronic weight management. Vivani plans a mid-2026 Phase 1 study comparing NPM-139 against Wegovy® injections to assess safety, pharmacokinetics and tolerability ahead of a Phase 2 dose-ranging trial.
1. Agreement with Novo Nordisk
Vivani Medical entered a non-exclusive agreement granting Novo Nordisk internal evaluation rights for NPM-139, the Company’s miniature, ultra long-acting semaglutide implant developed on its NanoPortal™ platform. There are no exclusivity provisions for either the implant candidate or the NanoPortal technology under this deal.
2. NanoPortal™ Implant Technology
NPM-139 leverages Vivani’s proprietary NanoPortal™ system to deliver semaglutide steadily over extended periods, targeting once- or twice-yearly dosing for chronic weight management. The implant design aims to improve adherence by offering a convenient alternative to daily or weekly injections.
3. Phase 1 Clinical Trial Plans
Vivani expects to initiate a randomized, first-in-human Phase 1 study in mid-2026 with Wegovy® injections as an active comparator. The trial will characterize safety, pharmacokinetics and tolerability of NPM-139 to inform a subsequent Phase 2 dose-ranging study.
