Waymo Pauses U.S. Freeway Rides; Google Mandates AI Tools in Interviews
Alphabet’s Waymo unit has halted all U.S. freeway rides and paused its Atlanta service after flooding triggered vehicle safety recalls and inspection protocols. Google will require technical interview candidates to use AI-assisted coding tools beginning later this year, embedding AI proficiency into its recruitment standards.
1. Waymo Service Suspension
Waymo suspended all driverless freeway operations nationwide and paused on-demand rides in Atlanta after rising floodwaters activated a safety override. The unit has initiated comprehensive vehicle diagnostics, software recalibrations and road-condition retests to address potential water-related sensor faults and ensure compliance with updated safety standards.
2. AI Tools Requirement in Interviews
Google announced that, beginning later this year, every technical interview candidate must demonstrate proficiency using AI-assisted coding and debugging tools. This move is intended to align hiring practices with the company’s broader AI deployment goals and ensure new hires can effectively leverage in-house and third-party AI frameworks.
