Waymo Vehicle Stops in Active Atlanta Crime Scene After $16B Funding
A Waymo driverless taxi bypassed police vehicles and stopped in an active Atlanta crime scene, placing its passenger at risk for the second time in months. This incident follows a December recall of 2,000 vehicles over school-bus stop failures and its recent $16 billion fundraise at a $126 billion valuation.
1. Atlanta Incident
Last week in Atlanta, a Waymo driverless taxi bypassed multiple police squad cars and entered an active crime scene before coming to a halt, putting its passenger directly in harm’s way. A police officer had to manually disengage the vehicle as it blocked first responders dealing with an armed suspect.
2. Recall Background
In December, Waymo initiated a voluntary recall of 2,000 vehicles after its automated system failed to stop for deployed school-bus stop signs, accruing 20 citations from a Texas school district. The company deployed a software patch in mid-November, but further violations prompted the recall to address the defect.
3. Funding Milestone
Earlier this month, Waymo closed a $16 billion funding round at a $126 billion post-money valuation, more than doubling the valuation from its 2024 Series C. The capital infusion aims to accelerate deployment and software development, though recent safety lapses may challenge public trust.
