We are capitalists: US Democrats push back against communist label ahead of midterms
SPY•Democrats in competitive midterm races are increasingly emphasizing their support for capitalism as Republicans intensify accusations that the party is socialist or communist. Sixty Democratic candidates have signed a pledge saying, “we are capitalist, not socialist.”
1. Campaigns stress capitalism
Democrats in tight races are highlighting their support for capitalism in campaign materials, town halls and media appearances, amid Republican efforts to portray the party as radical. A pledge launched by Promise to America has been signed by 60 national, state and local Democratic candidates, including 10 sitting members of Congress.
2. Attacks target close races
Republicans have cited Democratic Socialists of America policies and progressive primary wins in their attacks. Democratic strategists said the accusations could affect some close races, while Democratic leaders called them misleading and said they distract from economic concerns. A Reuters/Ipsos poll published last week found registered voters favored Democrats over Republicans in the congressional ballot, 43% to 35%.
3. Candidates respond
Arizona House candidate Amish Shah, who has faced Republican mailers depicting him with a hammer-and-sickle pin, said, “I'm not a socialist. I believe in capitalism as a great tool for promoting human prosperity.” Other candidates, including Kristen McDonald Rivet and Jessica Killin, have signed the pledge; candidates in several races said they were pushing back against labels of socialism and communism.
