WeRide and Uber Plan Zurich Robotaxi Launch Later This Year Under Asset-Light Model
WRD•WeRide and Uber will begin commercial Robotaxi services in Zurich later this year, marking their second European deployment following Madrid and leveraging a driverless permit from Switzerland’s FEDRO. Rydera will manage the fleet under WeRide’s asset-light model as the partners aim to scale tens of thousands of autonomous vehicles globally.
1. Zurich Deployment and Timeline
WeRide and Uber will introduce commercial Robotaxi services in the Greater Zurich Region later this year, offering rides through the Uber app once regulatory approval is secured. This launch follows their Madrid rollout and represents the partners’ second European market entry.
2. Regulatory Permit and Scalability
Zurich operations proceed under a driverless permit granted by Switzerland’s Federal Roads Office, with the fleet scaling in coordination with performance milestones and federal regulations. Authorities will oversee the transition to fully driverless services in urban areas upon meeting safety benchmarks.
3. Asset-Light Model and Fleet Operations
WeRide employs an asset-light strategy for the Zurich service, delegating day-to-day fleet management to local operator Rydera. This approach leverages external investment and operational infrastructure to accelerate market entry without large capital outlays.
4. Global Expansion Blueprint
The Zurich launch builds on WeRide and Uber’s existing Robotaxi networks across the Middle East and Madrid, with over 40 cities in 12 countries deployed to date. The partnership targets tens of thousands of autonomous vehicles worldwide as it scales commercialization.
