Why would Musk merge SpaceX and Tesla?
SPCX•Elon Musk said a merger between Tesla and SpaceX has merit, potentially creating a company valued at about $3.5 trillion. The combination would bring together their businesses in vehicles, energy, launch services, satellite communications, robotics and AI infrastructure.
1. Reasons for a merger
Musk said on Tuesday that combining the companies could help them cooperate on AI software, chip design, robotics, connectivity and orbital data centers. A merger could also simplify decisions about deploying capital, engineering talent and infrastructure across projects that span both companies, and consolidate Musk’s influence.
2. Potential collaboration
Tesla shareholders would gain exposure to SpaceX’s Starlink broadband operation, launch services and future space ventures, while SpaceX investors would gain ownership of Tesla’s vehicle, energy storage, autonomous driving and robotics businesses. Musk has announced Terafab, a semiconductor and AI-computing project for both companies, and hopes it can begin volume production by late 2028.
3. Risks and hurdles
The article says the combination could face regulatory and geopolitical scrutiny because SpaceX works with the US military, intelligence agencies and NASA, while Tesla has significant ties to China through its Shanghai factory. Shareholder and governance questions, including conflicts of interest, voting control and capital allocation, would also need to be addressed. The businesses’ expensive projects would retain their technical, regulatory and execution risks.
