Zelenskiy warns against normalising deals with Russia after Trump's diesel accord
USO•Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that a diesel accord between Donald Trump and Russia could pave the way for further sanctions relief, including gas deals. He said Ukraine could not risk a deal returning frozen Russian assets to Moscow.
1. Warning over sanctions relief
Zelenskiy said the diesel agreement could lead to gas deals and further sanctions being lifted, including measures affecting the banking system, individuals and chemical industry. He told reporters in Brussels that Ukraine could not accept such agreements.
2. Frozen Russian assets
Zelenskiy said Ukraine could not risk a deal to return frozen Russian assets to Moscow. Ukrainian and European officials have said the diesel accord appeases Vladimir Putin, while analysts said it was unlikely to bring sustained lower fuel prices.
